Recognition programs

Recognition programs work in two ways to support nurses. The first and most obvious of course is that nurses’ achievements are recognized and the nurses receiving the awards get a strong sense of satisfaction from a job well done. Colleagues and peers recognize these achievements, and the sense of accomplishment can spread to other nurses promoting general satisfaction within the profession. The literature notes that recognition and respect from employers is a key to nurse retention.

Additionally, media coverage of award and recognition programs and events promotes the achievements and accomplishments of the profession enhancing public awareness of what it takes to be a nurse.

Current programs:
Writing Awards Program: Nurse-authors are recognized for excellence in clinical and narrative writing for articles that were published in Nursing2006-2007 journal. Six awards were presented, three in each category at the Nursing2007 Symposium, an annual national conference, held this year in April in Orlando. Recipients and their accomplishments were publicized to the nursing community and the lay press to promote the nursing profession.

Cameos of Caring, 2005: Created by the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing, the Cameos of Caring awards are given annually to exceptional bedside nurses whose compassion and caring embody the spirit and profession of nursing. Twenty-seven acute care hospitals in western Pennsylvania, including all of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center hospitals, participate in these awards. Each hospital nominates staff members and selects a recipient who exemplifies the essence of the awards. The Nursing2006 Foundation donated to these 2005 awards, and winners are
