May 2006 -- The Nursing2006 Foundation distributed a grant for $9,000 to William Carey College, Hattiesburg, Miss., to provide stethoscopes, computers, and books to their nursing students who were victims of Hurricane Katrina. See full story here. The Foundation also donated over $2,500 to Delgado Community College's Charity School of Nursing for stethoscopes. Contributions came from The Patricia Kind Family Foundation, The Graduate Nursing Student Organization at William Paterson University of New Jersey, Nursing students and faculty at Napa Valley College in California (from the RN clubs graduating in Spring 2006 and 2007), Nursing students from Madonna University College of Nursing and Health of Livonia Michigan, Colleen Smith from Shelter Island NY, and other anonymous donors.
May 2006 --The Nursing2006 Foundation in conjunction with the Foundation of the National Student Nurses' Association, Inc., awarded a scholarship to Ecdo Otu from the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center, Lubbock, Tex. Ecdo (shown below with Nursing2006 Foundation President and CEO Cheryl Mee) is from Nigeria and has been in the United States for 5 years.
Formed in January 2005, the Nursing2007 Foundation offers new and exciting opportunities for nurses. Our mission is to support and promote the nursing profession.
The foundation will:
- distribute scholarships to nursing students at various degree levels, with a particular emphasis on those from minority cultures and male nursing students
- support mentoring programs that help nursing students through to graduation and passing licensure exam, and mentoring programs that encourage school-age students to consider a career in nursing with a particular emphasis on minority cultures and males
- recognize nurses' accomplishments, with an emphasis on their clinical expertise and knowledge
- promote educational activities that teach primary and secondary students about careers in nursing and educational activities for practicing nurses
The foundation will place particular emphasis on nursing students from minority cultures because the number of nurses from minorities is disproportionately low when compared with the number of minorities in the general population, as documented in the Sullivan Commission report. The benefits of developing minority nurses are clear. For example, a more diverse nursing work force can give all nurses the opportunity to better understand patients from varied cultures. Most important, a diverse nursing workforce can help overcome the disparities that minorities currently experience gaining access to health care. The Nursing2007 Foundation is currently focusing on two audiences--Native American nursing students and male nursing students. (For more information about these groups, click here.) This support is particularly vital because Congress has appropriated less federal grant money this year. Last year, Congress appropriated $33.6 million to 34 Centers of Excellence grans to fund training, recruitment, and retention of medical students and faculty from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups; this year, only $11.8 million has been appropriated.
The Nursing2007 Foundation programs and project supporters will be publicized in an effort to promote nurses’ accomplishments. Media outreach will emphasize nurses' and nursing students' clinical expertise and knowledge.
For more information about the foundation, contact President and Chief Executive Officer Anne Woods.
The Nursing2007 Foundation operates independently from Nursing2007 journal and its publisher, Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, a Wolters Kluwer company. The journal has donated resources and funding to the foundation. The Nursing2007 Foundation is an operating project under the Trust Counselors Network, a subsidiary of the Trust Counselors Network, Inc. (TCN), which was formed as a Pennsylvania not-for–profit corporation.
